Fighting for Rome : Poets and Caesars, History and Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (April, 1998)
Author: John Henderson
Average review score:

A triumph
Dr. Henderson's book is an excellent example of modern Classical scholarship. Innovative, clever, witty, it guides its readers through the turbulence of the literature. The translations of various passages were also very good, demonstrating that translation need not be dry, and displaying some of the poetic virtuosity of translators such as Hughes and Day-Lewis. I would recommend this for any student of first century Latin literature in particular.

First Sail
Published in Hardcover by Tidewater Pub (September, 1993)
Authors: Richard Henderson and Jennifer Heyd Wharton
Average review score:

Written to teach young folks how to safely ride a boat
Richard Henderson's First Sail is more than a warmly illustrated picturebook. It is an educational adventure, written to teach young folks how to safely ride a boat out on the waves. Every single page spread has an important selection of facts, vocabulary, knots, or sailing techniques, all with diagrams, all crucial for a brand new sailor just starting out. In fact, most adults will find a fascinating wealth of brand new information, unless they've been sailing for so long they know what beating to windward is, or the difference between a bowline and a fisherman's bend knot. With splendid illustrations by Jennifer Heyd Wharton throughout, the story itself is a sailing adventure that incorporates all the things and techniques of sailing shown in the sidebars. Very highly recommended.

Four More Screenplays
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Preston Sturges, Tom Sturges, and Brian Henderson
Average review score:

Great comedy films
Contains the screenplay for "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" (to my taste, the most hilarious film of all time). When I worked as a cataloger at Newport Public Library, I constantly told my co-workers that I thought Preston Sturges wrote better dialogue than Shakespeare. I could prune lines from "Hamlet," but I couldn't cut a single line from "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek."

Fresh Blood: New Canadian Gothic Fiction
Published in Paperback by Turnstone Press ()
Authors: Eric Henderson and Madeline Sonik
Average review score:

A Compelling Read
This is a gripping compilation of wonderfully diverse stories which look at our dark side. If you haven't yet felt the delightful tingle of New Gothic, this is a great introductory read. The choices are choice: varied literary styles, imaginative plots, fresh writing. It was a book I HAD to put down -- each tale called so much to question that I had to stop and think: to ruminate for a day or two before starting the next story. But, in as much as I had to let it go occasionally, I was also utterly compelled to pick it back up. Do not think of witches or angels here, but rather the tenor and mood of Poe -- all in a modern context. Delicious!

A great novel about surviving.
The author is a very talented writer. I am not just saying that because I know him. The book made me think about surviving in war and how hard it must have been to be in war
